Somme 1916

This video illustrates the story of the Somme using objects from the National Army Museum’s collection.

The first months of the Somme campaign were fought by Lord Kitchener’s New Armies, recruited and trained in 1915. In the last bitter, bloody months these volunteers were joined by conscripts who had been given no choice.

Right or wrong, the Somme campaign changed the way we understand war and soldiering forever.
